Big-name stars in the Chinese-language cinema are gearing up for the ceremony of the 51st Golden Horse Awards slated for Saturday night in Taipei. The event is hailed as the Chinese-language Oscars.
The star-studded event will feature celebrities including actresses Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, and Joan Chen, and actors Chen Jianbin, Sean Lau, and Aaron Kwok as nominees, award presenters, and jurors.
A total of 38 films, including 14 Taiwanese productions, have been nominated in 21 categories.
Leading the pack this year is Chinese director Diao Yinan’s thriller Black Coal, Thin Ice, which is a contender for best feature film, best director, and best lead actor and actress.
The only Taiwanese production in contention for best feature film this year is Kano. It has been nominated for six Golden Horse awards and won the Golden Horse’s audience and critics’ choice awards on Friday.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Taipei from 7pm.
