It’s the last weekend of campaigning before Taiwanese voters go to the polls next Saturday, and all candidates are hitting the campaign trail.
In Taipei, the ruling Kuomintang’s mayoral candidate Sean Lien held a rally Saturday afternoon that drew some 60,000 supporters. President Ma Ying-jeou, in his capacity of ruling party chairman, showed up at the event to drum up support for the candidate.
Lien’s major opponent, independent candidate Ko Wen-je, held a walking event Saturday morning. The organizer estimated that about 30,000 people joined the 7km walking event.
In other parts of Taiwan, chairwoman of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party Tsai Ing-wen showed up in the northeastern county of Yilan to campaign for the incumbent county commissioner. Other party heavyweights, including two former premiers, Su Tseng-chang and Frank Hsieh, headed to the southernmost county of Pingtung to gather support for the party candidate.
The local elections are scheduled for Nov. 29.
