Hopes for a long-awaited resolution to the standoff over a trade in services agreement with China have been dashed again.
On Saturday President of the Legislature Wang Jin-pyng canceled a fifth round of cross-party negotiations on the agreement. Four rounds of talks between the ruling and opposition party caucuses in the last week have fallen through.
The negotiations were supposed to find a way to end the student occupation of the legislature and to deal with the agreement. Student protestors have demanded that the agreement be returned to the administration before a new law institutionalizing close scrutiny of any such agreements is enacted.
