The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is celebrating what Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen says is the best election results in the party’s history.
The DPP picked up a total of 13 out of 22 of Taiwan’s city and county chief positions on Saturday.
Tsai thanked the public for their confidence in the party. She said the election results are indicative of the latest wave of public opinion. She also said it’s a sign that the younger generation is beginning to shoulder the responsibility.
Tsai called on DPP members to view the landslide victory with caution, saying that the ruling KMT’s setbacks should also serve as a lesson for the DPP.
Tsai said the election results have ushered in a “historic change” and that Taiwan’s future will be decided by its people.
