Many top opposition leaders turned out in black on Sunday in support of the Sunflower Movement protests. The leaders included former Vice President Annette Lu, as well as three former premiers, and former and current leaders of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Former DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen, who is also a former party chairwoman said, “The key to solving the problem is in the president’s hands. We hope that the president can offer specific, substantive promises, that can assuage the students concerns about the future of Taiwan.”
Meanwhile, DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang said that students were at the center of Sunday’s protests. Therefore, he said, he asked party leaders not to wear vests identifying their party connection, in order to enable them to truly stand together with the protesters. He said that there were no plans for party leaders to speak at the event.
