The former director of the American Institute in Taiwan, Douglas Paal, says he believes that China will continue to hold firm in its “one China” policy for dealing with Taiwan.
Paal said Monday that it’s hard to tell whether China will change its policy toward Taiwan after the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)’s impressive victory in Saturday’s local elections.
Paal said he believes Beijing will not ease its "one China policy" but instead will continue to strengthen it. He said it will depend on what steps are taken by the DPP in the future.
The "one China" policy has been recognized by the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. But the two sides differ on what is meant by "one China". Taipei says it means the Republic of China on Taiwan, while Beijing says it means the People's Republic of China, whose capital is in Beijing.
