Relations with China won’t be affected by the recent local elections. That was the word from Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) Chairman Lin Join-sane on Tuesday.
"The development of cross-strait relations is not a matter of political party interest," said Lin.
"It’s built on the interests of the nation, society and the people. We will continue to promote cross-strait ties and exchanges under the framework of the Republic of China constitution. That means the 92 consensus of “One China, each side with its own interpretation”
The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name.
Lin said elections help the government and political parties understand public sentiment but cross-strait ties will not be affected.
"We believe that the peaceful development of cross-strait ties will not be influenced by Hong Kong’s Occupy Central, and it won’t be impacted by the Taiwan elections," siaid Lin.
"That’s because we are not considering partisan interests but rather the benefits of the people."
He said that recently there have been small waves in society such as the Sunflower Movement, but these have not affected cross-strait ties.
The SEF is Taiwan’s semi-official agency in charge of cross-strait exchanges.
