Taiwan has formally implemented the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The convention was signed into law Wednesday to coincide with the International Day of People with Disability.
Representatives of 13 ministries, including the Ministry of Health and Welfare, held a press conference at the legislature on Wednesday to explain what the enactment of the convention will entail.
Director of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Social and Family Affairs Administration, Chien Hui-jiuan, said the Cabinet will set up a working group to promote disabled rights. The working group will coordinate between different ministries and government agencies.
Chien said in the next two years, this working group will submit a list of regulations to be amended or abolished. She also said this group will complete its examination of existing laws affecting the disabled within five years. According to Chien, the government will have to present a report on disabled rights within the next two years, and release new reports every four years thereafter.
