The Presidential Office announced Wednesday that Mao Chi-kuo will take over from Jiang Yi-huah as the country’s premier. Jiang resigned last Saturday after President Ma Ying-jeou’s ruling Kuomintang suffered a massive defeat in local elections.
Presidential spokeswoman Ma Wei-kuo said that Mao is already familiar with the day-to-day operations of the Cabinet. Mao will therefore be able to ensure the transition process goes smoothly.
In a statement, Mao said he is listening carefully to the public's critique of the government and their expectations. He also said that the Cabinet's mission is to serve the people.
