Gov’t to advance goal of economic integration at 2015 APEC Summit
Chou Tai-Chu

Taiwan’s government plans to use the 2015 APEC summit to advance its goal of integrating Taiwan into the regional economy. That’s according to Chou Tai-Chu, chief of the foreign ministry’s Department of International Organizations.

Speaking at a routine press conference on Thursday, Chou said that the Philippines, which is hosting next year’s APEC summit, has chosen the theme: “Building Inclusive Economies, Building a Better World.”

Chou said that dialogue at the summit will center around four topics: advancing the process of regional economic integration, human resources development and investment, building sustainable and durable communities, and bringing small and medium enterprises into the mainstream of global and regional markets.

Chou said that discussion on how to further regional economic integration will include an investigation into how the service sector can strengthen links across the Asia Pacific region. APEC leaders will also review progress on the implementation of the goals that the APEC leaders set at the 1994 summit in Bogor, Indonesia.

Chou said that Taiwan will take next year’s APEC Summit as an opportunity to promote Taiwan’s goal of joining proposed regional trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
