President Ma Ying-jeou says he hopes that Taiwan and France can set up a platform for regular talks between the two countries. He was speaking on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of French parliamentarians.
Ma said, “With the signing of a Taiwan-France agricultural cooperation agreement, the two countries should establish a platform for regular talks. That would be beneficial for promoting trade and other developments in bilateral relations.”
The two sides signed the agricultural cooperation agreement last week. That coincided with Taiwan opening its market to poultry imports from France.
Ma said even though Taiwan and France do not have formal diplomatic ties, the two countries hold frequent cultural exchanges and two-way trade has increased. He said that the two sides are also working on a working holiday agreement that would pave the way for youth exchanges.
