Deputy secretary-general of the Straits Exchange Foundation, Maa Shaw-chang, says allowing Chinese books to enter the Taiwanese market will help people from the two sides of the strait to know more about each other.
The foundation is a semi-governmental organization in charge of negotiations with China in the absence of formal ties between the two sides.
Maa made the comments on Friday at the opening ceremony of an exhibition in Taipei that showcases books from China. He said many people in Taiwan have concerns about opening up to China. He also said he does not think allowing Chinese books to enter Taiwan will lead to the brainwashing of the Taiwanese people. Maa said that opening up is the best way for a society to protect itself.
