New Premier Mao Chi-kuo has presented a government administrative report to the legislature. Mao took over from former Premier Jiang Yi-huah after the ruling party, the Kuomintang (KMT), suffered a massive defeat at local elections in November.
At the legislature on Friday, Mao said the ruling party’s electoral defeat was a reflection of public sentiment.
"We’ll listen carefully to people’s critiques of and suggestions for the government and we’ll reflect upon ourselves. If our policies are controversial, we’ll show our greatest sincerity and goodwill to communicate with the public and try to find a consensus,” said Mao
Mao said the government will seek to uphold social justice, ensure environmental sustainability, and enhance economic prosperity. He also said the government will continue to strengthen ties between Taiwan and China and expand foreign relations.
