HIV-infected patients will be eligible for organ transplants. That’s the word from the chairman of the Taiwan Organ Registry and Sharing Center, Lee Po-chang on Tuesday.

Under current laws, HIV-infected patients are barred from the surgery. But Lee said the center has decided to relax the laws on the grounds of fairness and human rights.

HIV-infected patients will be eligible for registry in the future. They will be put on a waiting list for receiving organs either from living or deceased donors as long as they meet certain medical requirements.

The requirements include a functional immune system, no out-of-control cancer or highly contagious diseases, continuous HIV treatment for more than six months and others.
