The National Communications Commission (NCC) says it will issue a security report covering the 12 most popular smartphone brands on the market.
The Ministry of Science and Technology recently considered banning civil servants from using Chinese-made Xiaomi phones after it emerged that the phones automatically transmit data to Xiaomi’s servers in Beijing. But the NCC said early this month that Xiaomi was not the only brand of smartphone that does not comply with privacy regulations.
At the legislature on Wednesday, NCC chairman Howard Shyh said a comprehensive security report will be issued by the end of the year. The NCC is working on an information security standard, and a bill approving the new standard will be sent to the legislature towards mid-2015.
