The legislature has passed an amendment that allows the economically disadvantaged to postpone paying taxes.
The current Tax Collection Act allows taxpayers to postpone tax payments or pay in installments if they are affected by national disasters, accidents or major financial losses. They will be given a three-year grace period.
KMT lawmaker Lin Te-fu said the economically disadvantaged just can’t afford to pay.
“There are a lot of disadvantaged people who struggle to eke out a living in our society. Of course, the government should treat them differently when it comes to paying taxes. I think the revision is in line with fairness and justice,” said Lin.
The financial ministry will define the qualifications of the economically disadvantaged and how the revision will be implemented.
