The Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) has announced that a stampede at a New Year’s celebration in Shanghai on Wednesday has left one Taiwanese national dead and two more injured. One of the injured Taiwanese nationals remains under observation in hospital while the other is in stable condition.
The total death toll for the stampede now sits at 36, with a further 47 injuries.
Earlier on Thursday, China’s official People’s Daily posted on the Chinese equivalent of Twitter saying that 10 bodies had been identified. The victims were young people, with those identified so far aged between 16 and 36.
Meanwhile, local hospitals are treating the injured. Most of the injured are around twenty years old.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged Shanghai hospitals to do everything possible to save the injured. He has also called on local authorities to determine the cause of the stampede and to draw serious lessons from the incident.
Meanwhile, Premier of China’s State Council Li Keqiang has called for medical personnel to save those with injuries and prevent the death toll from climbing. He also called for authorities to do everything possible to console bereaved family members.
