The number of dads staying at home with their children in Taiwan has reached a record high.

According to the latest figures released by the government statistics office, the number of fathers who do not work outside the home reached 49,000 last year. That’s more than doubled compared with the figure in 2010.

The government statistics office said certain gender stereotypes are disappearing, and more men now feel comfortable staying at home. On the other hand, the working environment in Taiwan is now more friendly towards women, and the share of women in employment has continued to rise, growing from 42.5% 20 years ago to just over 46% in 2013.
