President Ma Ying-jeou paid his respects to late President Chiang Ching-kuo on the 27th anniversary of Chiang’s death on Tuesday.
Chiang was the son of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. He followed his father’s footsteps as the president of the Republic of China on Taiwan from 1978 to 1988. Ma was once Chiang Ching-kuo’s English secretary. Ma has been visiting Chiang’s mausoleum in Taoyuan every anniversary of the late president’s death.
Ma was accompanied by Vice President Wu Den-yih and senior KMT officials. Taoyuan’s new mayor Cheng Wen-tsan of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party did not accompany Ma on the visit. Instead they met later in downtown Daxi in Taoyuan.
