Taiwan is requiring health checks on all ducks and geese before they are slaughtered. Slaughterhouses resumed the butchering of ducks and geese on Wednesday after a hiatus of two days due to an outbreak of avian flu.
After January 18, fowl raisers will need a certificate signed by a veterinarian before they can send their poultry to be slaughtered. Certificates will be considered invalid if signed more than three days before the slaughter.
In the three-day period before the new regulations take effect, farmers will be expected to keep detailed records on the health of their fowl. Veterinarians will also inspect poultry slaughtered during the next few days both before and after slaughter to ensure that no infected poultry is allowed onto the market.
