Taiwan has placed 54th in a survey of the world’s most expensive countries conducted by online database NUMBEO. The rankings reflect user submissions on the cost of living in 119 countries and territories.
Each country’s ranking is a composite of the cost of food, transportation, and rent among other expenses.
The survey found that Switzerland is this year’s most expensive country, with a Consumer Price Index of 126.03. Norway, Venezuela, Iceland, and Denmark filled in the remaining top five spots.
Rankings in Asia were highly variable. Taiwan’s ranking of 54 was considerably lower than Japan’s 24, but much higher than China’s 82, Thailand’s 87, and Malaysia’s 88.
Meanwhile, the survey found that India, Nepal, and Pakistan are this year’s least expensive countries.
