A Taiwanese climate fiction animation that seeks to raise awareness of climate change has grabbed the title of Best Cli-Fi animated series for children at the annual Cli-Fi Movie Awards 2014.
The animated series, titled Weather Boy, was produced by award-winning director Chiu Li-wei and his Tainan-based Studio 2 Animation Lab. The series centers around an eleven-year-old boy named Jamie. He joins his meteorologist father in a climate project in the mountains of Switzerland, where a climate machine takes them through time to catch a glimpse of Earth’s bleak future.
Director Chiu Li-wei said that he hopes the 13-episode series will help children learn about the importance of protecting our environment from a young age. Chiu also said that his film will contribute to Taiwan’s efforts to fight climate change.
“We want Taiwan to participate in more international projects. We don’t want to be marginalized. So through this series, we hope to bring some Taiwanese perspectives into this global issue,” said Chiu.
Weather Boy was also nominated for the Asian Television Awards in 2014.
