A foreign ministry official is saying that ties with the US are stable and that the two sides have built mutual trust. That’s after some concern over Taiwan raising its flag on New Year’s Day at the Twin Oaks estate, its former embassy in the US.
The head of the foreign ministry’s Department of North American Affairs, Kelly Hsieh, said a top US official recently said Taiwan is one of the US’s partners in the Asia-Pacific. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel said Taiwan, with US support in national security, has been a good example of economic development.
Hsieh said the US and Taiwan have built mutual trust.
Hsieh said, "In all matters, the understanding is there will be close communication, and that it would be low key with no surprises. So we believe we can come to an understanding on many things. Stable development of relations is of benefit to both sides."
Taiwan and the US are already planning their next meeting under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement.
