MAC Minister outlines agenda for cross-strait relations in New Year
Setting the Agenda

Mainland Affairs Council Minister Wang Yu-chi has outlined Taiwan’s agenda for cross-strait relations in 2015.

Speaking at a press conference Thursday marking the end of lunar 2014, Wang said that there are three major areas that require work: normalizing official exchanges between the two sides, passing a law that will establish an oversight mechanism for cross-strait treaties, and regularizing cross-strait negotiations.

"In the future, we will continue pushing for cross-strait dialogue, consultations and exchanges on the basis of the ‘1992 Consensus’ and the principle of ‘One China, two interpretations’," Wang said. "We will also cultivate official cross-strait contacts and interaction, secure more beneficial outcomes for Taiwan, and construct an institutionalized, peaceful, and mutually beneficial cross-strait relationship."

The 1992 Consensus refers to a tacit understanding between Taiwan and China. The consensus means that both sides agree that there is only "one China," and both Mainland China and Taiwan are a part of it. But the two sides differ on what the "one China" means.
