The legislature has amended the Animal Protection Act and is aiming for a no-kill policy in all animal shelters.
The amendment was passed on Friday. Before the amendment, animals kept in shelters that were not claimed or adopted within 12 days would be euthanized. Now that the act has been amended, only animals with contagious or incurable diseases, or animals considered to have a serious effect on environmental hygiene or public safety can be euthanized.
The new amendment also gives government agencies two years to improve the conditions of animal shelters. When the two-year period is up, there will be no more killing in animal shelters.
