Taiwan's ban on killing poultry begins as bird flu virus spreads
The outbreak continues

Taiwan has started imposing another temporary ban on the killing of chickens, ducks, and geese at the country’s slaughterhouses for a second time in a month, as an avian flu outbreak continues to affect more farms.

The ban began at noon Saturday and saw slaughterhouses across the country cleaning and disinfecting their facilities instead of slaughtering poultry.

Minister of Agriculture Chen Bao-ji said that the ban would last for four days this time. Earlier this month, the Council of Agriculture imposed a two-day ban on the killing of ducks and geese.

The council said that chickens, ducks, and geese that were previously slaughtered and refrigerated will be sold. It also added that the amount in storage is enough to meet the demand.

The council said it will monitor disinfection at the slaughterhouses and also tighten up inspections to see if there is any illegal slaughtering in the next four days.
