Taiwan’s Chan Yung-jan and China’s Zheng Jie have been defeated in the Australian Open women’s doubles final.

Chan was hoping to win the first Grand Slam title of her career, but on Friday Chan and her partner Zheng lost 6-4, 7-6 (5) to the unseeded duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. It marked the first time a new pairing has won a Grand Slam title since Dinara Safina and Nathalie Dechy won at the US Open 2007.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei saw her Australian Open come to an end when she and her Uruguayan partner were defeated in the semifinals of the mixed doubles.

The unseeded Hsieh and Pablo Cuevas were defeated by seventh seeds Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Leander Paes of India 7-5, 6-4.

The 29-year-old Hsieh is currently ranked sixth in the world in women’s doubles. She was ousted from the women’s doubles at the Australian Open in the second round and failed to make it through the qualifying draw in singles.
