Former economics minister Woody Duh has taken over as the head of Taiwan’s National Development Council. At a ceremony on Wednesday morning, he spoke about the future of the council.
"The future work of the National Development Council is not, as people assume, to stay the course or act as a transitional council," said Duh. "We aim to lay a foundation for Taiwan’s future development.”
Duh said that many people have asked him why he would take over as the head of the National Development Council after having served as the nation’s economics minister. Duh said that it’s pointless to keep staring at your shoes, and that you should set your sights farther afield.
The incoming minister recited a well-known verse to describe how he feels about taking over the job. He said: “Drift freely in the waves of change, with neither glee nor fear; When life does end, as end it must, all cares will disappear.”
Meanwhile, outgoing Minister Kuan Chung-ming said Wednesday that he was happy Duh was taking over his post. Kuan said he will have fond memories of the council’s accomplishments during his tenure.
