Taiwan’s representative office in New York has hosted a forum on efforts to implement the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The forum was held on Saturday in cooperation with Taiwanese Data Professionals, an organization made up of young Taiwanese nationals working in the US.

Among the panelists was Minister without Portfolio Audrey Tang. Tang is a leading Taiwanese computer programmer who is often identified by the unofficial title “digital minister”.

Tang spoke about the government’s innovative approaches to social problems and to implementing the UN’s sustainable development goals. These have included establishing a presidential hackathon and encouraging exchanges and dialogue between government ministries and across the public-private sector divide.

Other panelists spoke about work to implement the third UN Sustainable Development Goal- ensuring health and welfare- by using technology to improve the quality of care for senior citizens.

The foreign ministry says the forum reflects Taiwan’s response to the international community’s hope that technology and innovation will be used to help implement the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
