The Mainland Affairs Council has denounced the shooting of a protester in Hong Kong. The council is the top government body charting Taiwan’s China policy in the absence of official ties between the two sides.

The council said that the Hong Kong government’s oppression on democratic freedom will only create a vicious cycle. It says the best way to restore peace to the territory will be for the Hong Kong government to listen and respond quickly to its people’s demands .

Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary-General of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, Lin Fei-fan, said Wednesday that while China was observing its national day on Tuesday, it was creating bloodshed in Hong Kong.

Lin said,“The DPP once again condemns the violent incident in Hong Kong and again calls for the Hong Kong and the Beijing governments to stop this inappropriate use of force. I believe that the incident has already violated the bottom line of the international community’s moral code. The world will not tolerate this kind of violence.”

Lin said the Hong Kong authorities have not only used force against protesters but against reporters as well. The Democratic Progressive Party says it is questioning Chinese President Xi Jinping’s inconsistency in his speech on China’s national day, in which he spoke about keeping peace.
