A joint investigation is set to look into a case in which two men poured red paint on Hong Kong singer and activist Denise Ho in Taipei. At least one of the men has been connected to the Taiwan-based Chinese Unification Promotion Party

The case recently drew scrutiny after the Taipei District Court overturned the prosecutors’ decision to remand the suspects under the Organized Crime Prevention Act.

DPP legislator Kuan Bi-ling says the decision to remand the two suspects was warranted, because the Chinese Unification Promotion Party has had a history of violent behavior. She says that the court’s reversal will result in a loss of public faith in the legal system.

Justice Minister Tsai Ching-hsiang says the court’s decision is not a final verdict, and that prosecutors will work hard to gather evidence. He says that criminal organizations sometimes operate under the guise of a political party, and that would merit a more severe punishment.

He says the next step is to launch a joint investigation that pools the efforts of prosecutors, police and the investigation bureau.
