Taipei Mayor and chair of the Taiwan People’s Party, Ko Wen-je, has detailed his position on cross-strait affairs.
In May, Ko had said that Taiwan should adopt a friendly attitude towards China while maintaining good relations with the United States. During an interview with RTI on Wednesday, Ko further outlined his position, saying that his strategy is to be friendly towards Beijing in a way that will help maximize Taiwan’s space on the global stage.
During the interview, Ko also talked about his relationship with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. Ko cut his collaborative ties with the party earlier this year. He has since strongly criticized the party on several occasions. Ko said that he anticipates the party will continue to put pressure on him after the 2020 election, set to take place in January.
