A petition circulating on the White House website calling for the US to establish formal relations with Taiwan has accrued more than 100,000 signatures. The petition titled “The United States should formally recognize Taiwan as the independently governed nation it has been for over 60 years,” garnered enough signatures to require the White House to respond within one week.
The request was created on October 7, and had until November 6 to reach the 100,000 signature threshold and prompt a response.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it will respect the outcome of the petition. Foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou says the ministry will continue to monitor the developments, and that Taiwan will maintain its good relations with the United States.
