Some farmers in western Taiwan used to grow rice. Now they have turned to growing mangoes, which is providing them with more income than ever before.
In Changhua County’s Puxin Township, there used to be many farmers who only grew rice. At most, they could only make US$500 per plot. This low return is the reason why many local farmers have since turned instead to the golden honey mango, which can earn them up to US$10,000 from the same plot of land.
These days, annual revenue from local mangoes reaches US$1.6 million.
Even less-than-attractive mangoes are put to good use. With the help of the local farmers’ association, these mangoes are turned into dried mango slices or mango jam. They are also sliced in half and frozen, ready to be turned into delicious mango popsicles.
