Sugary drinks like juice and bubble tea are popular in Taiwan. However, a Taiwanese health expert has pointed out that consuming this type of drink increases the risk of health problems.

Bubble tea and juice are two of Taiwan’s favorite beverages. But drink too much and you face a higher risk of liver and kidney problems.

Lu Kuo-cheng, director of the Taiwan Society of Nephrology, says consuming sugary drinks like these raises the chances of developing kidney stones and metabolic arthritis.

Sugary drinks also lead to higher blood pressure as well as higher levels of blood sugar and blood lipids. They increase the chances of diabetes, too. Government statistics show that the number of those under 20 who suffer from type 2 diabetes has grown by 40% since 2009.

Lu recommends more exercise, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding foods and drinks that with a high sugar or salt content.
