Kaohsiung Mayor and KMT presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu met Friday with James Moriarty, the chair of the American Institute in Taiwan. The American Institute in Taiwan is the de facto US embassy in Taiwan.

At the meeting, Han thanked the US for its long term support of Taiwan. He said the US is Taiwan’s most important and unwavering ally.

Moriarty spoke about the city of Kaohsiung’s importance in Taiwan. He also spoke about the state of Taiwan-US ties.

Moriarty said,“And I do believe that your warm welcome is an expression of the long connection between Taiwan and the United States, which is, I keep on telling people, perhaps stronger now than it has been at any point in the 40 years since the Taiwan Relations Act.”

The Taiwan Relations Act is the legal basis for Taiwan-US relations in the absence of official ties.

Moriarty met with President Tsai Ing-wen this week prior to his meeting with Han.
