Guavas are a popular superfruit grown in Taiwan. Soon people in the United States will be able to buy them for the first time. Taiwan will become just the second country to export guavas to the United States.

A farmer is picking ripe guavas from the trees. These superfruits get packaged and sent throughout Taiwan. Changhua County produces more guavas than anywhere else in Taiwan. And now, after ten years of negotiations, they have a new market: the United States.

This guava farmer says it’s great because it’s a whole new market for them. This farmer says, “It’s very fortunate that they can export their guavas to the US.”

Taiwan is only the second country that can export guavas to the US. The only other one is Mexico but Mexican guavas are smaller and softer. So they’re usually used just for juice and jam.

Taiwan’s guavas are crisp, tasty and nutritious. They’re likely to be popular in the US. But does that mean prices will go up in Taiwan? This fruit vendor says they definitely will. That’s because the supply here will decrease. This vendor also says prices will go up

Changhua County says they’ll export the high quality guavas. If supply is low, local prices will go up. But they say some farmers won’t be able to match US standards for packaging, pesticide levels, and storage temperature, so there should be plenty left for Taiwan to enjoy.
