Taiwan’s Mainland Affair’s Council (MAC) says Beijing should give up its use of intimidation and threats to unify Taiwan with China. During this year’s Xiangshan Forum, Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said that no force could prevent “reunification.”
The MAC responded by saying that the 23 million people of Taiwan cherish their sovereignty and democracy, and will not respond positively to militaristic threats.
The council says that the Xiangshan Forum has become a platform for China to lambaste the United States and intimidate Taiwan. The MAC says the forum does not do what it claims to do: foster dialogue of any kind with regards to peace in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Mainland Affairs Council says that Taiwan has never threatened China’s way of life, nor does it intend to. It says that Taiwan is committed to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
