The Guanyin-Gufeng Tunnel is a highlight of the Suhua Highway Improvement Project along the northeast coast of Taiwan. As construction on the tunnel nears completion, cutting-edge exhaust fans are being installed to ensure driver safety.
The Guanyin-Gufeng Tunnel is sizing up to be one of the longest tunnels in Taiwan. The 12.6 km stretch is second only to the Snow Mountain Tunnel in Yilan. To prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide inside the closed environment, officials are importing 18 state-of-the-art exhaust fans.
The fans are as tall as a one-story building, and they’re the first of their kind in the country. Originally, the fans were going to travel by ship, a process that would have taken over two months. But in order for the tunnel to open on time in January, officials decided to bring the fans over by cargo plane.
The tunnel is part of the Suhua Highway Improvement Project. Once complete, the highway will be open to large transport trucks, making good ventilation even more important.
