The justice ministry says that there is a growing focus on providing court interpreters to immigrants and guest workers involved in legal cases.
On Wednesday, the ministry said that the number of cases in which court interpreters are used has risen in the past several years, growing from 3,200 cases in 2016 to 4,800 cases last year.
The ministry said it has been providing resources to increase courts’ ability to provide interpreters. It said that the Taiwan High Prosecutor’s Office now has 101 interpreters available, and that information available online allows other courts to share interpretation resources.
The ministry said it plans to join with private organizations next year to work towards making it easier for immigrants to understand translated legal terms. It said it also hopes foreign representative offices in Taiwan can help promote foreigners’ and immigrants’ access to the legal system.
