Birdwatchers spotted three red crossbills in the outlying Penghu Islands Wednesday.
The red crossbill is a rare member of the finch family. It’s slightly larger than the average finch, and is known for its distinct, reddish brown feathers. The bird is most often seen in northeastern China, around the lower course of the Yangzi River.
Several birdwatchers were pleasantly surprised to spot them in Magong, the islands’ main town. Many have gathered around the spot where they were seen to take photos.
