After years of research, a doctor in Kaohsiung has found that over 30% of those who take part in running events suffer from inadequate bone calcium. The doctor says the percentage of people without enough calcium in their bones is even higher among the general public. He is advising people to adopt healthier habits and a better diet.

The risk of low bone calcium is a significant, even among those who exercise. That’s the conclusion of Doctor Lin Chih-lung after spending seven years of research involving more than 67,000 participants.

According to Doctor Lin, more than 31% of those who take part in running events don’t have enough calcium in their bones. 6.59% of the runners also suffer from osteoporosis, a more developed symptom which puts them at an increased risk of broken bones.

Lin says that the prevalence of low bone calcium is even higher in the general population. He said that the causes of this problem include excessive consumption of soft drinks and coffee and inadequate exposure to sunlight. He has called people in Taiwan to exercise and eat better to reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis.
