Taiwan has given Hong Kong authorities a channel by which to send suspected murderer Chan Tong-kai to stand trial. That was the word from Mainland Affair’s Council deputy head Chiu Chui-cheng on Tuesday. Chiu says Chan and his family must come to Taiwan of their own accord, and abide by the process laid out by the Taiwan government.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam says that she doesn’t know when Chan will go to Taiwan. She says that Chan and his family have been receiving much false information in the past week.
Lam says that more than anything, authorities need to make sure that Chan will stand a fair trial in Taiwan. She says Chan and the rest of the world want justice for his crime, and that political motives should not be a barrier to that.
In response, the Mainland Affairs Council has said that Taiwan guarantees everyone a fair trial. It says that the key factors impeding the process now are Hong Kong’s sense of responsibility and the suspect’s own sincerity and willingness to stand trial.
