A petition calling on the Australian government to formally recognize Taiwan has gathered more than 10,000 signatures.
The petition was launched on the Australian Parliament’s e-petition website by a retired lawyer. It follows similar petitions presented to the US and German governments. Australian citizens and legal residents are eligible to sign the petition before the end of November 20.
The petition refers to Taiwan by its official name, the Republic of China. It says that the Republic of China is a “model liberal democracy” and a “beacon of democracy” that all other countries that care about democracy and freedom should recognize formally.
The Australian Parliament has no “signature threshold” that petitions must reach before being considered.
