The US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee passed the TAIPEI Act on Wednesday. The bill is designed to help Taiwan keep its diplomatic allies in the face of Chinese pressure and to give Taiwan a place on the international stage.
The US Senate had passed its own version of the bill in a unanimous vote a day earlier.
President Tsai Ing-wen has thanked both the US Senate and the House Foreign Affairs Committee for backing the bill. The foreign ministry has also welcomed the bill’s advancement, saying that its progress demonstrates the United States’ support for Taiwanese participation in international events.
The House version of the bill will next be put up for a vote. If passed, the US House of Representatives and the US Senate will have to work out the differences between their versions of the bill. Finally, the bill will be sent to the US President to be signed into law.
