The US and Taiwan began their first joint cyberwarfare exercises on Monday. The five-day Cyber Offensive and Defensive Exercises are being held in Taiwan.

American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Spokesperson Raymond Greene said that the exercises are a milestone for US-Taiwan cooperation. The exercises will simulate how to defend against cyberattacks from countries like North Korea, which could target democratic systems, critical infrastructure and financial institutions.

Greene said the US would help Taiwan join the US Department of Homeland Security’s Automated Indicator Sharing system. The US and Taiwan will also set up an international internet security excellence center. This will be a platform for Taiwan to work with the Indo-Pacific region  on data security issues.

Greene spoke about the areas in which the US looks forward to working with Taiwan. “Especially when it comes to cyber network security, 5G, and emerging technology in cyber security standards," said Greene. "We also hope to work closely with Taiwan through the center on capacity initiatives for the Pacific Islands.

Greene said that next year, the US will send experts to Taiwan to promote awareness of data security issues to the public. They will also conduct training sessions at major science parks and hold related forums along with companies in the tech industry.
