KMT presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu has named former Premier Chang San-cheng as his running mate. Han made the announcement Monday during a press conference at his Kaohsiung campaign office.
Chang became premier for several months in 2016, at the end of former President Ma Ying-jeou’s second term in office. Chang has a background in the technology field, having served in posts including supervisor of Google’s Asian hardware operations and science minister.
During Monday’s press conference, Chang explained his reasoning for joining Han Kuo-yu’s KMT ticket.
Chang said he had previously stated that he would not accept a position as vice president. However, he said serving as a consultant for Han on national affairs had changed his mind. Chang said that his comprehensive understanding of government administration will allow him to serve as a catalyst for real change as vice president.
Chang said that as an independent, he hopes to help Han create a government that makes decisions based on what is best rather than partisan interests. Chang also said he shares Han’s goal of removing the ruling Democratic Progressive Party from power, and that he put his technological background to use in helping Taiwan move forward.
