Keelung's Esquare and Folio Hotel were the top winners at Taiwan's 2019 Architecture Awards.
Commendations of excellence were also given to Kaohshiung's new performing arts center, Weiwuying, National Taiwan University's Wehouse and Yilan's Chuang Wei Shabing.
The judges for this year's awards considered the core values of energy conservation, public service, environmental impact, inspiration and innovation as factors for their selection.
Esquare was commended for transforming a former old building and undergound parking structure into an attractive urban hub of stores, restaurants and events. The new building vastly improved the quality of that central location in Keelung bringing new life to the city.
The Fubon Group transformed a former military barrarcks into the beautiful Folio Hotel. The judges said that this project provides inspiration for other urban renewal projects in Taiwan.
The awards are held by Taiwan Architect magazine and were announced on Tuesday. A formal awards ceremony will be held on December 14.
