Members of the association for retired policemen protested outside the Taipei District Court on Tuesday. They were protesting against the court’s earlier verdict on providing compensation for Sunflower movement participants.

The Sunflower Student Movement was a protest against the passing of a cross-strait trade pact in 2014. Some of the protesters forced their way into the legislature, which led to confrontations with the police. A total of 20 persons later filed lawsuits, claiming they were handled roughly by police officers during these clashes.

In October, the Taipei District Court ruled that the Taipei City Police Department must provide a total of NT$1.1 million (US$36,000) in compensation to 14 of the plaintiffs. The police department has acknowledged the verdict, but says it plans to appeal.

A large number of retired policemen gathered outside the Taipei District Court on Tuesday to voice their protest. They said the verdict is a denigration of the integrity of the police force. The court set up barbed wire to block off the protestors, who eventually handed in their official petition.
