Taiwan’s state-run power company, Taipower, said on Wednesday that the electricity pricing committee will have the final say on whether to raise prices. Electricity prices have become an issue as Taiwan’s presidential election approaches.
The company’s president, Chung Bin-li, also say that global oil prices will have a big impact on whether power prices will be adjusted.
Chung has also addressed Taipower’s losses this year, which reached over NT$8 billion (US$262 million) from January to September. Chung says that the company has switched from coal to gas in generating power in order to improve air quality. Chung said that though this fuel is more expensive, the reduced environmental impact makes the change worthwhile.
